About Black Hawk
Black Hawk is a brand of Masterpet (New Zealand), manufactured in Australia.
My 5 year old boxer has just been put to sleep after 4 months on black hawk sensitive gut and coat, was recommended this brand by work colleague shame I didn’t find this info first. My dog loved the taste but became unwell vomiting, no dihorrea, then started having tremors constantly. Scan showed pancreatitis and colitis but the toxins had gone too far, how do I no it was the food? I gave my son the left over biscuits after having to put my boy to sleep and his dog is now very unwell, so far we have spent $6000 on vet bills thanks to this brand and his dog is not out of the woods yet. Do not buy this product, they should be shut down

The breeder gave me the bag of puppy original medium breed – lamb and rice over the first few days he had diarrhoea and blood in his poo, seemed to be fixed after chicken and rice for a few days after a vet visit and some probiotics for his food they prescribed. Started him back on the food again the bag is almost empty and no other signs or symptoms since then he is going toilet normally. I am at the end of the bag and after reading these review think i’ll be changing his food.
My greyhound has been on Black Hawk for years with no symptoms – she is now a very senior dog. I recently purchased adult chicken and rice and she became very listless throwing up her food but still hungry. When I opened the new packet it smelt very strongly of something acrid and chemical but hard to describe. After a diet of boiled chicken and rice she began to improve so I slowly added more Black Hawk to her diet and she immediately became listless and uninterested in anything. Many visits to the vet and tests – nearly $1K – found she had no other issues. After eliminating black Hawk completely she is a much happier dog and nearly back to her old self. I’ve reported it through my pet supply shop with no response so far. Even after 8 years of this food with no issue it is now very toxic to her health. My advice – check the food alongside any other tests.
Been feeding our two golden retriever puppies Blackhawk chicken large breed puppy for the last 6 months (also what they were on from the breeder). Purchased a bag March 2023 from Petstock and both dogs became really unwell and had diarrhoea and lethargy. Kept on for about a week and blamed it on other things. Went to straight chicken and rice and reintroduced the food again with the same reaction to both pups with one ending up at the vet due to extreme dehydration and excessive poo. Switched brands and both pups are much better and solid poo. Will stay away from Blackhawk and recommend others to do the same.
I bought a 20kg bag of Black Hawk chicken and rice puppy food for our 6 month old kelpie and transitioned him from Royal Canin puppy food. After about 24 hours he had severe diarrhoea and after a few days there was also blood in his poo. We took him to the vet who said there was anecdotal evidence that Black Hawk food can cause diarrhoea and blood in the poo. We stopped feeding him Black Hawk immediately and the diarrhoea and blood in the poo stopped almost straight away. Back to Royal Canin for us. I raised the issue with Black Hawk who said they hadn’t received any similar complaints. Please let the company know if you experience anything like this as it may prevent other dogs going through the same thing.
I bought the lamb and rice puppy formula for my new puppy (Shetland Sheepdog). When I opened the bag the first thing I noticed was the foul smell. The kibble literally smelt like they had ground up dog poo and put it in a bag. It was awful. I did the slow change over as per instructions but as soon as my pup had any of this food he had terrible diarrhea and vomiting, it only got worse the more I increased the amount of Blackhawk. He became very tired and not his usual self he obviously felt terrible. I stopped giving this food after only about 4 days. (Which meant I had to do a 100km round trip back into town to get him something better). As soon as I stopped giving him this food it all stopped. He is now on Taste of the Wild and doing great. I put the bag of Blackhawk in the bin. I still can’t get over how much the kibble smelt. I will not even consider this brand again.
Our German Shepherd puppy suffered severe diarrhoea on the Black Hawk Puppy Food. Once we removed from these pellets and went to another dog food brand diarrhoea resolved.
Our 9 week old Groodle needed emergency vet care after starting this food. Blood in his mucus and violent vomitting. He recovered after a week of chicken and rice only for the same thing to happen again when this food was introduced. I have no doubt the food was contaminated.
